Back in black

Out for a pint with colleagues in London last night, tried this little black number. Made by brewers Anspach and Hobday of Bermondsey (London) it's a rich, smooth chocolaty porter called "London Black". Late last year this particular brewery did a crowdfunding round in order to develop this beer, among others, and their goal is to push it heavily in London pubs aiming to dislodge that other more famous dark beer from Ireland. I reckon it's got a good chance, it's delicious and much tastier than the aforementioned stout which is made by the international heavyweight Diageo corporation.

Porter is a traditional London drink, having originally been made popular there in the 19th century, this one leans into that tradition but also brings the style up to date for the modern urban beer drinker. It's nitrogenated (rather than naturally carbonated) and as you can see from the creamy head it's as smooth as you like, but the taste profile is something else, velvety chocolate and coffee, rich dark malts and an addictive bitter finish that leaves you wanting to take another sip. I liked the idea of this beer so much that I made a small investment in the brewery and hope to visit their tap room soon as it's only a stones throw from my company's new London office base. I hope they make it a big success, it's a great product from a small, artisanal UK producer, and let's face it, we need more of those!

London calling

Up in town yesterday to interview people for some job vacancies we have in our new London office, here's the view (kinda) from my window, pretty cool and so handy for the Bermondsey beer mile!

Bad week..

Like the poor buggers in Ukraine, this week has been a bad week for flags too..

Friday Smirk

The ever excellent Jesus and Mo pointing out one of the many logical inconsistencies with the religious position. I guess, when we're young, we like the idea of an all-seeing "Father" figure to make decisions for us, it's clearly comforting. The problem with such an obviously infantile desire like that is when we grow up we also need the "Father" to step aside and make way for the next generation..

Death Zone..

As someone on Twitter said, "this isn't war, it's murder"..

Risky

One of the things that the software my company produces does is to assess the risk of doing business with particular companies and individuals and part of that process is to perform what they call "AML" or Anti-Money Laundering checks. One of those checks is that none of the directors or beneficial owners of a company are domiciled in or passport holders of any of the countries on a list we call "the risky countries list", sadly we had to put Belarus and Russia on that list today joining other international outcasts like Iran, Syria and North Korea. Judging by the dreadful news today it would seem unlikely that these two names will be removed from this list for maybe decades to come, consigning whole generations of Russians to exclusion from interacting with people in countries other than those on this list, such a waste of talent and opportunity.

Empty Threats

Well, I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised, the Ukraine-Russia crisis has been eating away in that region for years, and a tipping point has clearly been reached. I think it's a legitimate question for us to ask "what's changed?", there are several hypothesis currently swirling around that question, some more fanciful than others. For me there are two plausible front runners. Firstly, that this is an attempt by an aging dictator to distract his people and further entrench his position, the well trodden, "they're all out to get us" ploy. Secondly, that this same dictator has simply become paranoid and is acting out some fantasy of empire and glory from a delusional view of the past, in other words, we're no longer dealing with a rational actor.

I don't know which of these is true, or even something else, but there's clear evidence for both. I did also notice how Putin seems to be playing out this charade exactly from the playbook of Trump, the posturing, the public theatre of signing pointless "laws", the rewriting of history and the poker faced proclamations of blatant falsehoods all depressingly reminiscent of how politics has been evolving both in the USA and here in the UK over the last decade or so, the tactics are clear, what's more elusive are the motives, at least he moves with the times I suppose, an indication perhaps that he's not totally bonkers just yet?

Another worrying sign for me is how Putin has aligned himself to religion. No longer is the church a threat to the state, as it was in communist times, something to be suppressed, but a tool with which to manipulate and control the ignorant masses (it's traditional role in those parts) Another dimension to the "mental health" theory is his paranoia around Covid, recent pictures of his stage managed meetings and signings show a man clearly worried about maintaining social distance, much more so than is necessary, these signs are not good. He recently attended Christmas mass alone (see picture below) at a residence outside Moscow rather than visit a church with other people, this is just plain weird and clearly an ominous sign that everything may not be firing on all cylinders in the Putin cranium?

How should we react? Another excellent question, and not one I see a clear answer to. It would seem that our own Government is up to it's neck in debt to Russian cash donors and that's alarming, however not quite as alarming perhaps as our seemingly heavy dependence on Russian commodities such as fuel, wheat and raw materials such as rare earth metals! It may be time to start looking again at the North Sea as a source of natural gas, much that that causes us pain from a carbon reduction point of view! Then again I guess if Russian gas isn't being burned because we're not buying it from them then the overall net result for the Planet isn't necessarily a lot worse from an emissions point of view. I'm not sure why we haven't kicked Russia (and Belarus) out of the financial systems of the world yet, that seems an obvious move to me? Also slapped personal financial and travel sanctions on it's international jet-set, maybe they could move their lavish lives from London and Nice to Tehran and Shanghai instead, see how that sits with them? Requisition London property, tricky but maybe, perhaps even expel Russian citizens from the UK, also tricky. I could see how this kind of ratchet of measures might sway the will of ordinary Russians but honestly, I can't see that our leaders would have the balls to do it or that it would make much difference to someone like Putin, it might even tip him over the edge if the "tonto" theory is correct.

Then, of course, is the question of helping the Ukrainians themselves. Supply weapons and intelligence to them, well yes, but without proper training and organisation that's a bit like supplying weapons to the Afghan army, i.e. pointless and in the end self-defeating since it all ends up in the hands of the Russian army anyway. I think the only realistic thing we can do is to pile our own armies and resources (such that they are) into the NATO countries surrounding the Ukraine, for example Poland and the Baltic states, hold our own strategic "exercises" close to the border. It would be a risky and provocative move but might give ordinary Russians pause for thought? However, the absolute poison of the false information war emanating from such a move would be something else in this scenario, I'm not sure we have the competence "in-house" to manage it that well TBH.

It's a really depressing and somber day. After the genocidal breakup of the Balkans and the falling of the Berlin wall I never thought that we'd find ourselves back in a place where a full scale land war on the European continent was not just likely but actually in progress! What's even more depressing is the pathetic shower that we call a Government, I simply have zero confidence that they can or will act in anything like a strong, measured and coherent leadership role. I listen to the pompous and childish ramblings of our defense secretary and contrast that with the stern, articulate and grown-up speech of someone like the German chancellor and rue the day that we left the EU. That is where we should be at this moment, at the heart of things in the centre of a bullet proof alliance of like-minded and powerful states, not on the sidelines suffering our ridiculous and petty criminal leaders to make empty threats.

Boggling

Ok so this scary pattern boggled my little mind for a few minutes today (are those lines really moving like that?)..

Also, how satisfying is it to write down todays date 22/2/22!

Fly by..

Standing on a train platform last week and noticed that the skies above the South East of England are gradually getting back to normal, probably around 500 people flying by in metal tubes in this picture.

Revised Upwards

I remember back in 2015/16 while on holiday in Cornwall I tried a beer from a brewery I'd never heard of called "Verdant". It was a thick gloopy liquid that, looks wise, reminded me of chicken gravy! It tasted weird to me then, I only rated it 2 out of 5 feeling that it was just too funky for me.

Fast forward 5 years and my palette has most definitely changed (or perhaps matured!) Over that period I've tried more and more styles of beer, particularly hazy hop bombs like the one above, and they've become more available and varied. I have grown to love the style (when done well). The beer I had back then was called "Allen" and I had it again for only the second time last night and my goodness it was banger!

The "funk" that I found strange back then is due to Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand used in the beer, this hop imparts a very distinct flavour, almost white wine like fruitiness but also umami too, once you become accustomed to it you become totally hooked, and this beer has a ton in it! The Nelson hops are backed up by Simcoe, Mosaic and Citra, the holy trinity of citrus and dank flavours and all together they blow your socks off, a stunning beer, smooth and totally balanced.

Suffice to say my rating has been significantly revised upwards!

Arguments

I came across this little diagram on the interwebs the other day, it's a useful illustration of the kinds of arguments that can be experienced when debating other people or organizations. My own experience (in business) where there are formal power hierarchies (i.e. companies are not democracies) is that most of the action occurs in the bottom four segments, "evidence" it would seem, is still a rare and undervalued commodity in most businesses that I see. In politics this seems to be the case also, although hopefully the pandemic has highlighted to more people to the value of evidence, or at a minimum, highlighted to everyone else the people who simply don't value it and probably never will.

Freaky Friday

The next station up the line from my home town, Bracknell, thoroughly mullered by a large tree blocking  the track. Let's hope they get it sorted out before the rush hour, nothing worse than being delayed getting home on a Friday night!

Eunice mayhem..

Quite an alarming picture on first inspection. Taken in Reading (the nearest big place to where I live) it shows a wall that has collapsed in the wind, however (fortunately!) unusually the wall contained a statue of a cartwheeling boy but if you didn't know that you'd think the worst!

For reference the picture below shows the art installation prior to storm Eunice... (a gift from the city of Dusseldorf which is twinned with Reading)

Compelling TV

If you're interested in aviation or technology then take a gander at Big Jet TV on YouTube who are streaming live from runway 27L Heathrow right now as planes attempt to land there in the midst of 70mph wind gusts and all round hair-raising conditions. About half of them bail out and go around for multiple attempts, it's hair raising stuff, utterly compelling! (man, these pilots earn their money on days like this!!)

Nice to see you, to see Eunice..

Out for my usual lunchtime walk today in the midst of storm Eunice (dumb I know) but TBH it didn't look that bad at first, blue skies and the occasional gust but after a while I realised that it's a very unique storm! Seems to be quite lumpy, big wind for 5 minutes then 15 minutes of not much at all with bands of clouds interspersed with blue sky and warming sunshine, after half an hour reason got the better of me and I decided to cut the walk short and hunker down indoors, may stick my nose out a little later today when it's supposed to calm down a bit! The poor chap in the photo got thumped by a falling tree on the main road into my town, luckily no one hurt but a sobering sight, not something I normally encounter when out for a stroll!!

Friday Smirk

Like most "holy" books I've ever read, I find that they reliably contain the odd poetic truism and often reflect common Human musings about how to live a good life, but, unfortunately this is invariably interspersed with vast tracts of waffle, regurgitated mythology and parochial nonsense, clearly man-made and clearly reflecting the concerns of the people who wrote them.

Fascinating from an historical and literary point of view but little else IMO.

On this day in History

On this day in 1600 Giordano Bruno, philosopher and scientist was burned at the stake (upside down and naked!) He was charged with heresy by the Catholic church and later (after 7 years of confinement and trial) executed in the Campo de' Fiori which is a public square in Rome. It's worth looking back at the accusations made by these esteemed Cardinals (one of which went on to become Pope) to remind ourselves what happens when man-made religions are permitted to gain total power and subsequently rule over us based on parochial and unfalsifiable beliefs rather than common law, reason and rationality.

The charges were,

- Proposing that the stars are distant suns

- That these suns could have planets around them

- That these planets could harbor life

- That the communion can't possibly transform into the literal body and blood of Christ

- That the universe is infinite and has no "centre"

Thanks goodness we've moved forward since those days (only 400 years ago) and religions of all kinds are generally in retreat from the town halls of the world, long may that trend continue.

Thursday flower power

While out walking yesterday I couldn't help notice a patch of flowers poking through the dead leaves as I passed by some open ground in between houses. I guess these were crocus plants? Anyway, if they are then a quick google suggests that they should be flowering from "mid-spring" From the look of these examples however, I'd say they've been out for at least a couple of days meaning that they actually flowered in mid-February. Seems on the early side to me? I also couldn't help but notice how warm it was today, around 13 centigrade, I was positively sweating as I cranked out the kilometers in my Winter coat. Still, I see that we're in for a battering from two successive Atlantic depressions over the next couple of days, but with temperatures in double figures at least we won't see any snow or ice! There's always an upside I guess..

Flavours of the weekend

I tried a new beer at the weekend, from my local brewers Siren it's a collaboration with the Old Street Brewery in London (Hackney Wick). A deliciously crisp pale ale with a boat load of fruity hops in it. Galaxy, Nelson, Citra and Idaho 7 combine to deliver a refreshing and juicy beer (nice can design too!) chock full of tropical fruit and citrus flavours but with a refreshingly bitter (like grapefruit) finish to it. Very nice drop indeed, I have one more can left which I have my eye on for supping this Friday evening!

Wine Myths

In a recent BBC piece it was claimed that two glasses of wine were enough to hit the daily sugar limit of a typical adult (30g). I thought it sounded a bit unlikely so I did a bit of my own research and dug out the original report into the sugar content of wines by the Alcohol Health Alliance (see above) As is plain to see if you pick the the highest sugar content wine, a Moscato (which frankly most people will never have heard of) then you may get close to that figure, however wines that would more commonly be drunk by people like a red Shiraz or Merlot contained only traces of free sugar (i.e. none). I wish the BBC would take more care to provide useful information (being a public service) and not pump out sensationalist headlines that are pure click-bait.

Libertarian?

Lot's of coverage for Novak Djokovic in the news today, mainly excerpts from an interview he did recently with Amol Rajan of the BBC where he attempts to "clarify" his position after the debacle of the Australian Open championship and his eventual expulsion from that competition. I've listened to most of the interview now and frankly it "clarifies" nothing for me, I still don't understand what his objections to vaccinations are nor do I understand the obvious contradiction in his claim that he wants total control over what he puts into his body because he's an "elite" athlete and yet seems quite content to miss tournaments (i.e. ceasing to be an elite athlete) because he won't put something as innocuous as a vaccine into his body.

I think I'd respect the guy more if he just said something like "I'm shit scared of f**king up my body because it pays for my lavish lifestyle" - that's something that I think everyone could at least partially understand. The problem for him is that he would then have to explain why he's afraid when billions of people have had vaccines with no problems at all, and also why he feels that his ability to earn huge amounts of money might trump other peoples freedom to NOT catch Covid from him! I fear we'll not hear any straight answers on any of these points so the chances are that he'll miss a few tournaments, oh well, I can't say I really care about that, he's free to make that choice, some people are just selfish I guess.

First Growth

We had some good friends over for dinner last night (Saturday) as they were celebrating a recent success at work. Fortunately these particular friends are into their wine, and especially Bordeaux, luckily for us they bought the above beauty along with them for everyone to try. It's what's called a "First Growth", which is the highest designation in the 1855 ranking system for Bordeaux wines. There are five levels or "growths" in the system but only five particular chateaux qualify for first status, Lafite, which is owned by the Rothschild family is one of those five. This means that these wines are among the rarest and most expensive of all Bordeaux wines and regularly go for many hundreds of pounds per bottle and sometimes, in good years, even higher. This bottle (actually a half bottle) was the 2004 vintage which was a relatively good year coming from a large crop in the region, we were eager to try it. Having decanted the wine we let it open out for half an hour or so and then dove in, wow, delicious, blackcurrants, dark fruits, spice and sweet oak. So perfectly balanced, a faultless wine showing off all the typical traits of this famous wine growing region, a delight to try and we savored every last drop. Fortunately, the meal I cooked for everyone, a red wine lovers feast of steak and dauphinoise, turned out pretty decent too, followed by some awesome cheese from Neals Yard in London, an embarrassment of riches consumed over the course of a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Plague Island

So the chancers running the country think it's time we dispensed with all the safety measures to do with the current Covid pandemic, against most scientific advice (and common sense). I suppose the logic is that deaths and hospitalizations are at "acceptable" levels, where essentially that means everyone has more or less gotten used to the fact that 1,500 people are dying every week and 200,000 new cases are emerging every day (according to the independent Zoe study). It seems to me to be an entirely politically motivated decision, one that's been manufactured to ensure that the Tory back-benchers who are poised to remove the head of their leader are somehow placated and distracted by being allowed to sneeze over everyone in their local "Spoons"! It strikes me that we're steaming toward being labelled "plague island" again, cue associated travel bans! Or, perhaps the Government is keen to ensure that the next world conquering variant comes from the UK, after all we don't want those pesky Russians or Europeans to beat us to it would we!

Freedom (with benefits)

Much grinding of teeth going on in Australia at the moment. The Government there are attempting to pass a bill aimed at "protecting" religious people, but as most secular and liberal commentators there are pointing out it's a bill that allows religious institutions (like schools) to discriminate against people on the grounds of immutable characteristics like sexual orientation or race.

Surely it's about time our species realised that religion has no place in the town hall? It's divisive, subjective and lacks any demonstrable credibility when it comes to, oh I don't know, minor details such as the appreciation of REALITY or MORALITY! Faith is not immutable, it's a choice, albeit one deprived from most people through childhood indoctrination, even so, however deeply felt, religions are just ideas and the world is pluralistic, our laws should be too.

Bad day at the office..

Out on my daily walk today and came across this sad little car with it's front all smashed in. Nothing else around and no one in the car? Anyway, from the damage it looks like it ran into the back of a flatbed truck or similar, the front bonnet was caved in and all the airbags were triggered, a right mess. Hopefully no one was hurt but I can't imagine this one will pass an MOT anytime soon! A bad day at the office you might say..

Navigating variety

Had this little belter last night whilst making Friday night supper for the family. Called "Suspended in Azacca" it's a nice 4% hazy session pale ale loaded up with (no surprises) Azacca hops which impart a delicious Mango and citrus flavour to the beer. Local brewery Siren have really hit on something here I reckon. This is is around the 40th version of this beer, each one involving the exact same malt bill and style but different hops or hop combinations, it's a really great way to build a brand (the label design is always the same) that's recognized by punters (the locals just ask for a pint of "suspended") but also a way of introducing different hop flavours. This is something that comes in really handy as you navigate the massive choice of hops in beers these days, especially when you're looking for something you like in a new place where you aren't familiar with the range.

Another excellent J&M this week; pointing out that not believing stuff that has no evidence whatsoever is not the "radical" viewpoint in the debate, quite the opposite.

This explains a lot!

Big Walk Thursday

Spent the day in London today (on business) so I decided to leave early and, rather than take a crowded tube train to get from Paddington to the City, that I'd walk it (~8 km) It was a decent old walk at a healthy pace! (75 mins) I managed to snap this picture of "Lady Justice" on top of the central criminal court (Old Bailey) on the way past, glinting in the February murk. I was so encouraged by the walk out to the City that after my meetings I decided to walk back to Paddington, looks like I'll smash my steps target today covering at least 20 km in total!

Midweek Mirth

A bit random but this is possibly my favourite cartoon of all time, make of that what you will!
