It's funny how Human Beings have this innate tendency to fear what they don't understood, even more so if that thing is also outside of their own experience. I think it stems from our evolutionary past, being a social species we have inherited an instinctive fear of the outgroup! Back on the savanna, in the Pleistocene, this was perfectly rational! After all, meeting a foreign tribe unexpectedly often meant a fight to the death for scarce resources or reproductive access etc. Nowadays of course we don't need this instinct but unfortunately things like religion, culture, race, sexuality, language etc. reawaken it and bring it's irrational ugliness to the surface all too easily.
