Many people with start-up ideas misunderstand or simply miss the concept of "scaling" a business and still making a profit, if it costs you a dollar to sell a dollar of product then you have a problem that can only be tolerated for a short period of time. The only time you can ignore this is when your product is your customers/users (like social media) and you sell something else (like advertising), even then scale only comes with more users (i.e. you still have to get new people to use your product).
