Water quality in Warsaw, Poland is monitored by a team of eight clams, yes clams! These honourable members of the mollusc family have a remarkable ability to detect toxins in their water so those smart (and cheap!) people in Poland have a group of them wired up to trip switches that trigger in the event that the clam detects poison in the water and closes, the circuit then closes and switches off the mains supply until the incident has been investigated.
