London Stories


If you walk down Borough High St., in Southwark you eventually come to an old church called St. George The Martyr and behind that building is an alleyway called Angel Court. The old wall on one side of that alley is all that's left of the Marshalsea Prison, which, in the early 1800's was a small debtors prison. It's famous because it's the very prison that Charles Dicken's father, John, was banged up in (1824) and the bad experiences suffered by 12 year old Charles became an inspiration for his 1855 novel "Little Dorrit". You can still see some of the old grave stones of debtors stacked up against the wall in the churchyard, there's even an engraved paving stone to tell the story (see below)
