Scottish Weekend - Part III

A first for me, a pub cricket team whose pitch is the beach! We took a little detour from St Andrews down to a little coastal village called Elie and dropped into The Ship Inn for a pint. The pub team was playing a match against St. Andrews "Old Seagullians CC" and a sizable crowd had gathered to cheer them on from the shore, even though it was freezing outside! I did wonder how they managed to get the cricket ball to bounce properly on wet sand but apparently they roller the sand before a match and then use a large plastic ball, a bit like a softball ball rather than a traditional leather one, it seemed to work fine although I suspect that any kind of spin would be quite difficult to achieve.

It was chilly watching the match from outside but luckily the pub was cosy inside and we took full advantage of the warmth! We didn't stay until the end of the game but, judging by the number of beers flowing from the beach bar, it looked like a good knock was had by all! I guess the matches are limited overs kind of deals, I imagine that after a while "tide stops play", what a great tradition!

Back on solid ground we had a wander around Dundee centre and came across this chap (above). It's "Desperate Dan", slightly odd until you realise that the city is the home to the publishing house (D.C. Thompson) that prints The Beano comic, I used to love that rag when I was a lad! We also took a stroll around the V&A design museum by the waterfront, which had an exhibition on about tartan. It covered all aspects of the famous design, it's history, manufacture and meaning etc. very interesting, I snapped this picture of the exhibition hall entrance (below)
