Scottish Weekend - Part II

So, here's an interesting thing. If you have a wander around the Greyfriars Kirkyard (grave-yard) in Edinburgh city centre, you will come across a number of graves whose occupants have rather familiar sounding names. Here is a photo I took last weekend of the gravestone of one "Tom Riddell", and if you are au fait with the characters in the Harry Potter books you'll know that this is the real name of the dark lord, Voldemort! The reason these names are in the books is that J. K. Rowling (author) lived in Edinburgh at the time she wrote the books and used this very grave-yard as inspiration for the characters in her yarn, it's a positive tourist mecca, probably the busiest grave-yard in Britain!

Here's another notorious spot, a pub called "The Last Drop" and much like it's equivalent in London (The Angel next to St. Giles & St. George church) is supposed to be the final drinking hole for convicted criminals who were being transported to the gallows in Grassmarket Square adjacent to the pub. The name obviously has a double meaning, and not too subtle a pub sign outside either!

Here's a memorial to some of those people whose final moments were spent at this spot..
