Around this time every year my local craft brewers (Siren) launch a series of dark beers loosely based on the concept of "rum infused chocolate cake" and various other luscious ingredients. Usually they're known as the "Caribbean Chocolate Cake" beers or "CCC" for short, I've blogged about them in the past. This year, as is their habit, the guys at Siren decided to shake things up a bit and launch three new "CCC" beers (brewed in collaboration with three other breweries) but this time base them on different kinds of beans, coffee, cocoa/cacao and also vanilla. Called "Candour", "Curiosity" and "Charm" the beers were launched last week and I picked up a set to try, you can see the first one in the picture above.
I'll review the other two in separate posts but the first, Candour is a thick, rich stout brewed with Cycle Brewing in St. Petersburg, USA. The beer uses cacao nibs to give it it's deep dark Belgian chocolate flavour alongside oodles of dark malts making it utterly black in colour. The beer was boiled for 16 hours (normally you only boil these kinds of beers for 90 minutes), meaning it reduced in volume and increased in viscosity, the result is amazing. Utterly unctuous, incredibly thick and creamy deep chocolate flavours and a roast/vanilla/caramel note on the finish, can't wait to try the other two!
